FORGET New Year’s Resolutions this year. I have two words to carry with you into 2012. These two words will not only change your body, your health, your spirit for good, but these words put into action, will drastically improve every aspect of your life. Over the past year, two very important people brought to my attention these two very important words. And I am so grateful to them. The words..... Patience and Process.
Ok sure, we all know that, “patience is a virtue.” Whatever. And, yes, we all know that making lasagna is a lengthy "process." But when applied to our health and our bodies patience and process take on a much deeper meaning.
When it comes to our bodies, we tend to get so wrapped up in how we WANT to look. We lose the opportunity to enjoy the process of getting to the body we desire. We decide what we want and we rush to get there. Often we make drastic changes all at once. We see moderate results but one slip up, and we head right back down the path to our old habits and our old body and body image. The same holds true for injuries, emotional well-being and minor vices.
However, over the past year I have seen and experienced what patience and process can do for a person. I have watched bodies transformed from obese to lean, athletic and strong. I have witnessed people take control of their health and reverse potentially fatal illnesses. Emotionally, I have gone from dark and hopeless place into a life full of light and love. These changes didn’t happen overnight or even over a week. These changes happened over the past year and they continue. Each of us undertook a personal journey and in order to keep healthy we have to stay committed to that journey, for life.
Having been such powerful year, I was forced to stop and assess all of the changes around me so I could share the key to lifelong health with others. That’s when it hit me, patience and process. So, how do we put these words into action and take control of our own health and well-being?
First, we begin celebrating small improvements. Change is a slow and lengthy process. If we begin to celebrate small improvements in our habits such as trading in soda for iced tea or increasing our exercise time by three hours a week we will see our belly fat begin to disappear but more importantly we will suffer less anxiety increase our overall sense of well-being. The process of making small changes a few at a time are the key to creating lifelong healthy habits.
Second, we view stumbles and slip ups as speed-bumps. Often when we undertake a drastic change (like a diet) life gets in the way and we end up blowing it somehow. A birthday party with beer, pizza and cake can throw a curve ball in anybody’s weight loss plan. I say, "eat the cake, drink the beer and have some pizza." Slow down, enjoy every bite. Speed bumps are strategically placed opportunities to help us enjoy life.
Last, we plan to LIVE fully, everyday of our life. If we wake up ready to live, celebrate and enjoy each day our lives will be full. View each hit and speed bump as part of the growing process. A life lived with healthy body, mind and soul is a life fully lived.
This year don’t make a resolution; make a commitment to undertake a journey of patience and process. Remember, it’s all about the journey, not the destination.
